Tesla is a Texas-headquartered public company developing electric vehicles, energy systems, autonomous driving technology and humanoid robotics. Incorporated in 2003, it is developing Optimus as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid intended for work that is unsafe, repetitive or monotonous.
Company overview
Tesla combines large-scale manufacturing, AI training infrastructure, vision-based autonomy, software and vertically integrated hardware. Its June 2026 regulatory filing says the company is working to develop and commercialise AI robots, including Optimus, and is investing in manufacturing capacity for the programme.
Optimus programme
- Purpose: a general-purpose, bipedal autonomous humanoid able to navigate, perceive and interact with the physical world.
- Current stage: pre-production development, with first-generation production lines being installed at Tesla’s Fremont factory.
- Initial use: Tesla says the first manufactured units will enter its internal Optimus Academy for training-data collection and further functionality development.
- Commercial status: no public customer order page, confirmed selling price or delivery schedule has been published.
Why Tesla matters to robotics
Tesla brings manufacturing scale, substantial capital, AI compute and global public attention to humanoid robotics. Those advantages make Optimus strategically important even though the company has not yet demonstrated commercial deployment at scale. Production targets and long-term cost claims should be treated as forecasts until supported by delivered machines and customer evidence.
UK and European relevance
Tesla has established vehicle and energy operations in Britain and Europe, but Robot Harbour has not verified an Optimus sales programme, preorder route, external pilot, service network or commercial deployment in either region. Optimus should therefore be treated as unavailable to UK and European customers.
