Tesla Optimus is a pre-production general-purpose humanoid being developed for autonomous work in environments designed for people. Tesla describes the intended tasks as unsafe, repetitive or monotonous, but has not yet opened customer orders or published production-version specifications.

Current development status

Tesla’s Q2 2026 materials say the company has decommissioned the Model S and Model X manufacturing lines at Fremont and is installing its first-generation Optimus production lines. Production is anticipated later in 2026, although the company has not published a confirmed output schedule.

The first manufactured units are intended for Tesla’s internal Optimus Academy, where they will collect training data and support further functionality development. That is an engineering and data-collection programme rather than evidence of commercial customer deployment.

What is confirmed

  • Form: bipedal humanoid
  • Intended role: general-purpose autonomous work
  • Core software goals: balance, navigation, perception and physical-world interaction
  • Initial manufacturing location: Fremont, California
  • First planned use: internal training-data collection and functionality development

What is not yet confirmed

  • Production-version height, weight, payload and operating time
  • Customer selling price or quotation process
  • Order opening or first external delivery date
  • Supported commercial tasks, service terms and warranty arrangements
  • UK or European availability

Claims versus evidence

Elon Musk has described very large long-term production ambitions and potential pricing at scale. Robot Harbour treats those statements as forecasts rather than specifications. The more reliable present position is that the first production lines are still being installed and the first robots are designated for Tesla’s own training programme.

UK and European availability

No Optimus sales, preorder, pilot or authorised support programme has been announced for Britain or Europe. Optimus is therefore not commercially available in either region.
