Boston Dynamics is a US robotics company best known for high-mobility machines that have moved from research demonstrations into commercial inspection, logistics and early industrial humanoid deployments.
Company overview
Founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert as a spin-out from the MIT Leg Lab, Boston Dynamics develops mobile robots designed to work in complex physical environments. Its current portfolio comprises the commercially available Spot quadruped and Stretch warehouse robot, alongside the product version of the Atlas humanoid.
Ownership and current status
Boston Dynamics is a subsidiary controlled by Hyundai Motor Group. On 16 July 2026, Hyundai said group shareholders were pursuing the acquisition of SoftBank Group’s entire remaining stake. The proposal was still subject to internal governance and approval processes at the time of verification, so Robot Harbour does not treat it as completed.
Products and scale-up
Spot is used for remote inspection, sensing and data collection; Stretch automates case handling in warehouses; and Atlas is beginning selected industrial customer deployments. In June 2026, Boston Dynamics announced a $100 million expansion in Waltham, Massachusetts, centred on a new 323,000-square-foot facility intended to support Atlas, Spot and Stretch. The company said the programme could support 1,250 jobs by 2033, with a phased move expected from mid-2027.
UK and European relevance
Spot is commercially available in the United Kingdom and European Union and is CE marked. Boston Dynamics says its robots operate in more than 35 countries. Stretch also has commercial European deployments through logistics groups including DHL, Otto Group and Arvato. Atlas availability in the UK and Europe has not been confirmed; its 2026 deployments are committed to early partners.
